Steam Deck right-stick delay: check the layout.

Checked October 16, 2026 · Full game · Source-based guide

THE SHORT ANSWER

Inspect the right stick’s Steam Input mapping and deadzone before treating the delay as low frame rate. crazyj3d1 reports that adjusting the directional-pad deadzone helped; switching to joystick-mouse first improved control but made PC and controller glyphs alternate.[1]

A reversible layout check

  1. Record or save your current controller layout so you can restore it.
  2. Inspect how the right stick is mapped. The player’s default layout used directional-pad behavior; do not assume your current layout is identical.
  3. If it matches, adjust that mapping’s deadzone gradually and compare aiming in the same place. Restore the saved setting if it feels worse.

Why joystick-mouse is a trade-off

The report describes two different outcomes: joystick-mouse caused alternating input icons, while the later D-pad deadzone adjustment avoided that conflict but still felt imperfect. It supplies no numeric setting that can be recommended to everyone.[1]

If the layout does not match

Include the layout name, right-stick mode and whether the icons switch when reporting the issue. “Verified” describes compatibility, not proof that every controller mapping feels right. No launch-option or operating-system change is required by the reported method.
