Lost backpack? Start with the symptom.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Check your game version and the kind of loss before trying a recovery. Patch 1.0.47.0 addresses water-sunken bags, partial-stack item loss and backpack-content swaps. It does not promise to restore every previously lost backpack.[1]

Checked October 16, 2026. Official patch statements are separated from player reports below. This site has not tested recovery, and a prevention fix is not proof that old missing items return.

Match the symptom to the patch

What happenedConfirmed changeWhat remains unproven
Bag or death pack ended up in water[1]Patch notes say bags now wash ashore rather than sinking out of sight.Whether an old missing bag will reappear in an existing save.
Items vanished when added to a partial stack[1]The notes say this loss should no longer occur.Restoration of items lost before the update.
Contents changed after switching backpacks[1]The update targets swapped or duplicated contents.Repair of every save that already contains incorrect items.
Bag unreachable or missing after death[2]Launch players reported this separately.A universal recovery method; do not assume the water fix covers every location.

The checks worth doing first

  1. Check whether your installation has received 1.0.47.0. If it is still on an earlier build, install the available update before judging the patched behavior. This page has not established identical rollout timing on every platform.
  2. For a water-related loss, inspect the nearby shore. That follows the patch's stated new behavior, not a guarantee of retroactive recovery.
  3. Distinguish a missing bag from missing contents. Note whether it followed death, water, a partial-stack transfer or swapping backpacks. Match that event to the table instead of applying unrelated fixes.

Do not assume a respawn rescues the bag

In the launch discussion, Jaron reported using the starvation respawn while important items remained in a backpack in an area they could not return to. That is one player's report, not a controlled recovery test.[3] Do not use a respawn solely on the assumption that it will bring the backpack back.

If it is still missing after the update

Send a precise report through Steam Community discussions (external, opens in a new tab). Include the platform, version, location, trigger, whether the bag itself or its contents vanished, and whether any required tool was inside. Screenshots help distinguish an inaccessible drop from an inventory transfer problem.

We cannot currently offer a verified method to recover an already deleted bag. This guide does not recommend deleting saves, installing an unrelated crash fix, or treating an unofficial mod as proof that an old item can be recovered.
